故事發生在 1989年的葡萄牙首都里斯本。一名中年惡徒住在位於舊市區的廉價民宿裡，他飽受病痛煎熬以及生活上的不順遂，只得靠舒伯特的音樂以及對電影的熱愛來維持生命，遠離悲苦。

某天，他意圖對房東太太的女兒做出不軌行為，而轟了出去。他便開始到處流浪，身無分文，沒多久就被關進一家拘留所。被放出來之後，他決定完成在所中認識的一個老朋友的「不可能的任務」… …

A middle-aged poor devil lives in a cheap family boarding house. Tormented by illness and various adversities, he feeds on Schubert and, perhaps, a vague love of cinema as a way of fighting against the misery, which is his life. However, following a frustrated attempt to compromise the virtue of his landlady's daughter, he is thrown out into the street. Alone, deprived of any resources, he is confronted by the harshness of the city and is interned in an asylum, from which he will emerge, upon his considered decision as a free man, to fulfill a "rich and strange" mission, indicated to him by an old friend, a mental patient like himself: "Go out there and make them sweat!"

Joao de Deus, an aging intellectual and aesthete who manages a cake and ice-cream shop in Lisbon. In the evenings he works on his "Book of Thoughts", a rare erotic collection. He enjoys succumbing to the pranks and gossip of young girls, mostly sales assistants from the confectioner’s, owned by the resolute Judita. The latter entrusts Joao to negotiate with a powerful French investor, but he isn't too successful, and his life is further complicated by the local butcher who plans to take revenge when Joao robs his under-aged daughter Joaninha of her virginity.

In a deserted and frozen park, Joao de Deus is visited by an Envoy of God. The Envoy gives him a suitcase stuffed with money and then leaves. Joao sits counting the bank notes. Suddenly, the calm waters of a nearby lake are disturbed by something that has fallen in. Joao goes to investigate. A young woman has fallen into the lake and is drowning. Joao dives in and drags her out, unconscious. He carries her to a convent and then returns to the park in search of the suitcase...

禾安是獨居的鰥夫，除了一個坐牢的兒子外，沒有其他的家人也沒什麼朋友。他每天的例行活動就是搭公車，藉著公車往返，當成他散步的路線，沒有什麼大事可以改變他的活動。

在家中，禾安只有書本及 CD為伴，他一度想找一位女管家作伴，無奈因為條件嚴苛，實在不易找到。隨著兒子的出獄，他寧靜的生活將會發生什麼大改變呢？

Joao Vuvu - a ’merry widower’ without a family (if we don’t count a son imprisoned for armed robbery). His only joy is his daily ritual: taking the bus he travels from Praca das Flores to the garden Principe Real, then back again and home. Only here and there some episode disturbs his secular journey which perhaps expresses Joao’s longing for solitude. The return of the prodigal son awakens in old Joao his own natural criminal inclinations and definitively situates him into the role of a renegade and marginal stooge...
