A huge Brechtstyle epic that deals with the course of Greek history from the Metaxas dictatorship (1939) to the reestablishment of the rightwing government of Papagos (1952), covering the War, the German Occupation and the Civil War. This period of history is traversed by a company of travelling players that roams the countryside performing "Golfo", an archetypal dramatic idyll of idealised Greek romance, while the members of the company live through the political ups and downs and a family tragedy like that of the Atreides.

On New Year's Eve 1976, a bourgeois hunting party finds, in the snow, the body of a partisan killed in the Civil War. Amazingly, the corpse is still warm and the wounds fresh; as the hunters give evidence on the case, they realize they are somehow implicated in the man's death. Angelopoulos' feelings about the betrayal of his country by the Right are given clear, powerful voice in this stirring study of collective guilt.

Two young Greek children, Voula and Oreste, run away and head for Germany, where they believe their father is now living. En route, they have numerous adventures, both heartwarming and dangerous. Along the way, they are helped by a group of actors and by a likeable cyclist. Their obsession for the absent father figure takes them toward the boundary of adolescence.

Realizing that after spending his entire life chasing after the words of poems and novels, Alexandre wants one final chance to capture the lost precious moments of true happiness, even if only for one day.
